Go And Tell The Spartans

They did not wish tribute,
Nor song,
Nor monuments,
Nor poems of war and valor.
Their wish was simple:
“Remember us.”
“Remember why we died.”
That was their hope,
Should any free soul come across this place
In all the countless centuries yet to be,
“May all our voices
Whisper to you
From these ageless stones,
‘Go and tell the Spartans,
Stranger passing by
That here
By Spartan Law
We lie.'”
