I don’t think I’ve mentioned it on the blog before, but I am a huge fan of Motown. The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Drifters, all those old groups from Detroit, I love them.
Anyway, getting to the point of the post, I came across this video on YouTube. It’s an excerpt from a Motown concert back in 1985: Motown Returns to the Apollo. If I remember correctly, said concert was the first time that any Motown artists had performed at the famous Apollo Theater in almost two decades: the theater had fallen into disrepair in the late 60s as Motown went out of style, and was eventually converted into a movie theater. The theater was eventually restored to its former glory in 1985: actually, I think this was one of the first concerts performed at the Apollo since it’s restoration was completed.
Anyway, since I seem to have gotten off-topic again…
This features the original 5 Motown groups, (in order of appearance), The Manhattans, The Cadillacs, The Drifters, The Temptations, and The Four Tops.
Believe it or not, the “improvised” battle between the Temptations and the Four Tops actually first occured two years prior, at the 1983 concert Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, which was the record label’s 25th Anniversary reunion. The battle (which I think actually was improvised in 1983) actually inspired the two groups to tour together for two years after this concert. The “Battle” was the highlight of the tour.
So, anyway, enjoy, and Long Live Motown!!!!
